AKC field events are broken into two types: Hunt Tests and Field Trials. Hunt Tests consist of three classifications: Junior Hunter, Senior Hunter and Master Hunter. Each has specific requirements the dog must perform, to a prescribed level, in each classification. Dogs are individually judged against the standard (see AKC Hunt Test Regulations). Field Trials also have different classifications: Open Limited Gun Dog, Open Gun Dog, Amateur Gun Dog, Open Gun Dog, Open Derby, Open Puppy, etc. A dog must compete against the other dogs entered in that classification. Additionally these events can be broken down into either walking or riding stakes.
(see AKC Field Trial Regulations).
