FIELD TRIAL REPORT

By Karen Nelsen

The Field Trial began with “short sleeved shirts” weather and ended with “button up your overcoat” conditions. During the set up on Friday, participants were walking around in light clothing, and, in fact, the evening was balmy as well. Saturday started with warm breezes, but by the afternoon, we knew there was a front blowing in. The weather changed dramatically during the afternoon. The wind came up, the skies darkened and it got cold! Sunday went from “Oh, its not going to be bad” to “what the heck is this freezing rain?”

We ran a total of 116 dogs with a minimal amount of changes in the running orders of the stakes. We had more conflicts with club members getting to the trial to help out than we did with all the dogs we ran. Jim Kidder was unexpectedly called to work, so Karen ended up picking up the equipment trailer from Karla’s and drove it to the site without the proper running lights. (This would eventually prove a problem in getting the trailer back to Karla’s in the dark.) Dominic Milano was unable to come, so there went our efficient running order/course overseer/conflict solver. Taking a lesson from Dominic’s time-clock precision management skills, Karen had charts up with the approximate times and who was supposed to be on what course. The word from the judges was that they never had to wait for any brace at the starting line.

Vice President Tom Collins was coming with a friend to help out, but he too, was unable to make it. Don Magoon got one of our gunners, Darryl Brown, to plant birds off one of the two ATV’s that Norm Nelson (a GSP Pro from Northern California) brought down with him. Charlie Licitra (Ammo’s dad) showed up after a very long shift at work, so he got put on the second ATV to plant birds as well. Many thanks to Linda Langford (Brittany club person) and Cindy Leffingwell (another Brittany person) for planting birds on the Gun Dog course. Wayne Romanski (GSP) did a great job getting the course planted for the All-Age stake. We couldn’t have done it without the help from these very generous field trialers. We also appreciate Eldon Bouchie (English Setter/Brittany), Pennie Peterson (Brittany), Cindy Leffingwell, and our very own member from Oregon, Terry Duffin for stepping in to help with the judging.

The weather turned especially nasty during the call-backs for the Amateur and Open Gun Dog stakes. The wind was really blowing, the skies were very dark. Who would have thought that it would take almost an hour and a half to get the call-backs done? Then the freezing rain started and we had to finish the derby stake and the walking puppy stake. Thanks to our judges, Pennie and Terry (on the puppy course) and Craig Lewis and Karla Weber (on the Derby course) for enduring the hellacious weather!

There were 14 All-Age starters, 18 Amateur Gun Dog starters, 31 Open Gun Dog starters, 30 Derby dogs, and 12 puppies in each of the puppy stakes.

Cathie and Courtney Magoon did a fabulous job with feeding the judges and helpers. Their lunches were delicious and really hit the spot when it counted. Cathie also made sure that the coffee and other assorted goodies were out for our early risers. Special thanks to Craig Troncale for cooking the dinner on Saturday. He did a super job! Cathie was still recuperating from jet-lag having attended the Westminster Dog Show in New York, and Karen was relying on others for a ride when her Tahoe suffered from starter problems. (Thanks to Ed Dixon for solving the problem the next morning!)

Thanks to Linda Rice (as sick as she was) for helping with the AKC paperwork and getting the award ribbons completed. Thanks to Jimmy Rice for soothing hurt feelings and calming turbulent waters. Thanks to Craig Troncale for schlepping the equipment trailer back to Karla’s. Don Magoon’s new acquisition of water tubs for dogs and horses were wonderful. Don even hand made the super roading ropes that were presented to the judges as “thank you” gifts.

Based on the figures already submitted, it looks like the Club made about $1500 on the trial. There are still some expenses that haven’t been reported, so the total may be a bit lower.
